The GT fun continues for 1992... Unfortunately, decreasing sales of the Mustang resulted in 1992 having the lowest production run of Mustang GT’s from 1982-1993 - down another 3,983 units from 1991. It appears that Ford had the Fox-chassis Mustang GT the way they wanted it, because the performance news for the 1992 model year is more of the same great get up and go seen in 1991. The familiar 302 HO V8 was back packing its tried and true mass airflow sensor, 60mm throttle body, tuned length aluminum intake plenum, 19 lb-hr injectors, E7TE truck heads, roller lifter cam, remote low-restriction air cleaner, and EEC-IV electronics system. Of course, no ‘90s GT would be complete without its stainless steel exhausts teamed up with stainless steel tubular headers, 10.84-inch front brakes and the GT handling suspension consisting of progressive rate springs, 1.3 inch front anti-sway bar, 0.83 inch rear anti-sway bar and gas pressurized struts with rear quadra-shocks.
Identical to the ‘91 GT in almost every way on the outside, the ‘92 GT featured 5-spoke cast aluminum 16x7 inch wheels with P225/55ZR Goodyear uni-directional Gatorbacks standard and P225/55ZR16 all-season performance tires optional. It retained its flush-fitting headlamps, aerodynamic nose, rear wing, round fog lights, louvered taillights, flush rear quarter window and ground effects package. Even the paint colors remained the same from 1991 with exception of one thing - Medium Red was now available with the Titanium lower accent treatment. The following paint colors carried over from ‘91: Medium Titanium Clearcoat Metallic,Titanium Frost Clearcoat Metallic, Deep Emerald Green Clearcoat Metallic, Wild Strawberry Metallic, Twilight Blue Metallic, Ultra Blue Metallic (all of these available with the Titanium lower accent treatment), Black Clearcoat, Oxford White and Bright Red and Medium Red. The only exterior change from '91 to '92 was the deletion of a trim piece on the convertible top just above the rear window (on the main convertible top member).
The similarity to the ‘91 carried over to the interior as well with the standard 7,000 rpm tach, articulated sports seats, interval wipers, center console, driver’s foot rest/ support and brake and accelerator pedals positioned to allow heel-and -toe downshifting. Carryover interior trim colors were Scarlet Red, Titanium and Black with Titanium leather seats offered in the GT hatchback. The leather seat choices for the convertible GT remained as black, white and red or white and titanium. Two new items which set the ‘92 GT apart from the prior year were the addition of dual map lights introduced with a new dome lamp (to replace the swiveling map light in previous GT’s) and a new optional 4-way power driver’s seat. This joined the rest of the options for 1992, including: 7 band graphic equalizer, power locks and windows, speed control, dual remote mirrors, air conditioning, sunroof, rear defrost, cargo tie-down net and electronic AM/FM stereo with cassette. One other change from '91 to '92 on the convertible interior was the deletion of the rear power window switches in the back seat area.
Although the Fox-chassis Mustang GT design was growing old (10 years old, to be exact), it was growing old gracefully and still beating the competition in straight line performance and value. It charged ahead into 1993 frisky as ever.
